With a stifling defensive effort that limited visiting Pillager to nine second-half points, Swanville came away with a 39-32 triumph in its season opener, Thursday.

Junior Nikki Primus posted a double-double with 14 points and 16 rebounds to lead the Bulldogs, followed by senior Tiffany Barthel with eight points and five rebounds.

Seniors Marissa Evans and Abbey Schultz each added five points, with Evans grabbing 10 boards and Schultz distributing five assists, followed in the scoring column by sophomores Danica Hanson (3) and Steph Koetter (2) and senior Rachel Muhlenkamp (2).

“It was nice to escape with a win even though we didn’t shoot well,” Swanville head coach Aaron Gapinski said. “It was a good team win with contributions from many. There are things that we can take from the game to work on, but I was pleased with our intensity and defense.”

Swanville plays at Osakis, Tuesday.
