Wrestling: Pierz tops Kimball in early CMC showdown, takes down Royalton-Upsala

The Pierz wrestling team knocked off defending Central Minnesota Conference (CMC) champion and state runner-up Kimball Area 34-28 in the first of two home duals, Tuesday, then defeated Royalton-Upsala 49-15.

Senior Travis Johnson, juniors Brandon Sullivan, Chris Ortman and Jordon Goebel and eighth-graders Brandon Ortman and Brett Kapsner were double-winners for Pierz.

Seniors Brad Meyer and Nick Lochner, juniors Evan Woitalla and Curtis Brisk and eighth-grader Kolton Eischens each added a win.

Royalton-Upsala senior Cory Wensmann won a match-up of ranked wrestlers at 220 pounds against Pierz, as did junior Mitch Lange at 170.

Freshman Kyle Lange earned a fall at 160 and sophomore Joe Jensen won with a 12-8 decision at 113 for the Royals.

Pierz and Royalton-Upsala will both compete at the Paul Bunyan tournament in Brainerd, Friday – Saturday.
