Pierz used three players in double figures and a strong defensive effort to hold down visiting Paynesville Area 53-47, Friday.

Senior Ben Boser was the top scorer for the Pioneers with 17 points, followed by senior Jess Kasper with 15 points and 10 rebounds and senior Cullin Carter with 13 points and six rebounds.

Junior Matt Athman contributed six points, eight rebounds and four blocks, while seniors Jon Fuhrman and Josh Templin each added two points.

“We didn’t shoot the ball well, but still came away with a win, which is a good sign,” Pierz head coach Matt Poepping said. “I thought the kids played great defensively in the first half.”

Pierz plays at Pequot Lakes, Tuesday.
