The opening dual of the night was a back-and-forth contest, starting with Apollo taking a pair of decisions to go ahead 6-0, only for Pierz junior Brandon Sullivan and freshman Kolton Eischens to record consecutive falls.

Pierz junior Ryley Smude tries to work St. Cloud Apollo junior Niles Hundaby over to his back at 220 pounds, Friday. Smude earned a pair of falls on the night, each clinching a Pierz win.

Apollo earned a pin in the next match to even the score at 12-12, but a trio of wins by eighth-graders Lane Girtz (9-6), Brett Kapsner (fall 5:41) and Matt Kummet (forfeit) put Pierz back in the lead at 27-12.

The Eagles rallied to tie the score once again at 27-27 heading into the final three bouts of the dual before senior Travis Johnson and juniors Ryley Smude and Curtis Brisk recorded three pins in a row to close out the win for the Pioneers.

It was more of the same in the final dual of the night, with Pierz withstanding a Milaca charge in the middle weights to complete an unbeaten night.

Eighth-grader Brandon Ortman opened the dual with a 17-1 technical fall, followed by a forfeit for Sullivan at 120 pounds and another pin for Eischens at 126 to give the Pioneers a 17-6 lead.

Pierz junior Curtis Brisk sinks in a half against St. Cloud Apollo junior Derek Biendara during Friday’s home tri. Brisk earned a first-period fall to seal the Pioneers’ 45-27 victory.

Milaca erased the deficit by winning the next three weights, but Kummet earned a 4-2 win at 152 and senior Brad Meyer notched a second-period fall at 160 to give the Pioneers the lead back at 26-17.

Milaca came back with a pair of falls to go ahead 29-26, but Johnson and Smude each responded with their second falls of the night to clinch the win for Pierz.

Pierz returns to the mat at Mora, Thursday.
