Boys Basketball: Pierz douses Holdingford offense in second half to remain unbeaten

After trailing 24-19 at halftime, Tuesday, the Pierz boys basketball team outscored host Holdingford 32-9 in the second half to earn a 51-33 win and improve to 4-0 on the season.

Seniors Mitch Bednar, Cullin Carter and T.J. Hoheisel each scored 10 points and seniors Ben Boser and Josh Templin added nine apiece to lead Pierz’ balanced offensive effort.

Bednar also grabbed 15 rebounds to notch a double-double and Hoheisel recorded seven steals.

Senior Jon Fuhrman chipped in three points and three steals.

Sophomore Matt Vasilj provided the bulk of Holdingford’s offense with 17 points, followed by seniors Sam Butler (6), Cody Schwinghammer (4) and Dylan Scegura (3) and junior Jeremy Springer (3).

“We started slow, but I was pleased at the way we responded in the second half,” Pierz head coach Matt Poepping said. “It’s nice to see the team fight back from a deficit.”

Pierz plays at Albany and Holdingford opens play at the St. John’s Prep tournament, Thursday.
