Pierz junior Jordon Goebel watches the final seconds tick off the clock after earning a 9-7 win against Litchfield in the opening dual of Friday’s Little Falls quad.

As junior Ryley Smude went from being down to on top, so did the Pierz wrestling team in a thrilling 37-32 victory at Little Falls, Friday.

After a pair of walk-through appetizers foe each squad over Albany and Litchfield, the main course arrived between the Pioneers and host Flyers to cap off the Little Falls quad.

The two rivals served up a back-and-forth affair, featuring an equal mix between powerful pins and contentious high-scoring battles.

The dual started with the Flyers sprinting to a 12-0 lead on quick pins from seventh-grader Leo Wilczek and sophomore Logan Kapphahn, only for the Pioneers to answer right back with falls from freshman Kolton Eischens and junior Chris Ortman.

Little Falls sophomore Axel Lange locks up a cradle en route to earning a fall over Albany's Leo Kerfeld during Friday's quad. Lange won both of the matches he wrestled on the night.

After the first four bouts failed to last beyond the first period, the next two provided compelling match-ups, starting with Pierz junior Evan Woitalla rallying for an 11-8 win at 132 pounds to give the Pioneers their first lead.

However, Little Falls sophomore Axel Lange regrouped after allowing a pair of third-period takedowns that forced overtime, emerging on top 12-10 to even the team score at 15-15.

Little Falls senior Connor Scherping powered his way to a 15-0 technical fall at 145, but Pierz senior Brad Meyer locked up a pin at 152 to put the Pioneers ahead by one at 21-20.

Pierz senior Josh Lanners capped his perfect day returning to the lineup off of injury with a 16-5 major decision at 160, then senior Nick Lochner topped off his own comeback with a second-period fall at 170.

Needing a win to remain within striking distance, Little Falls senior Joe Reis erased an early deficit to record a fall with 11 seconds remaining in the second period, closing the gap to 31-26 in favor of Pierz.

Wrestling without a heavyweight for the night, meaning Little Falls was guaranteed six points in the final bout of the match, the Pioneers either needed bonus points or a sweep of the final two duals to secure a win, with the Flyers needing to take at least one match.

Pierz senior Travis Johnson came within one point of a major decision at 195, yet still provided a 13-6 victory, setting up a winner-take-all clash at 220.

Smude gave up the opening takedown, but came back to take a 4-3 lead into the final period.

After getting turned over to his back for three nearfall points, he pulled within one at 6-5 after receiving a stalling point, yet still needed to break free as time wound down, needing an escape to tie the score and force overtime.

Instead, with five seconds left, Smude came up with a two-point reversal, going ahead 7-6 to clinch the dramatic victory for the Pioneers with enough breathing room to withstand the forfeit to Little Falls senior Conor Swanson at 285.
