Onamia man convicted for fleeing a peace officer in motor vehicle

Lonnie Joseph Bellcourt, Onamia, was convicted of a felony Jan. 4, for fleeing a peace officer in a motor vehicle.

In October 2012, Bellcourt, 46, was arrested after being chased by the Minnesota State Patrol and law enforcement officers from two counties.

A Crow Wing County deputy was assisting in the attempt to find Bellcourt, who was driving a GMC Yukon that had been involved in a fleeing incident the previous evening.

Bellcourt was located east of Pierz on County Road 39 and didn’t stop for law enforcement, but continued to the city of Pierz, where he collided with another occupied vehicle, then continued to Lastrup, where the vehicle became disabled.

Bellcourt fled on foot into a swamp and was located by a Morrison County canine unit, more than an hour after he was located on Highway 39.

Bellcourt’s sentence of 15 months in prison was stayed for three years. He was sentenced to 150 days in jail and given credit for 84 days served. He will have supervised probation for three years.

A gross misdemeanor count against Bellcourt of driving after cancellation was dismissed.
