Former Minnesota Senate GOP staffer Michael B. Brodkorb, 39, of Eagan was taken to Regions Hospital in critical condition after a one-vehicle crash at about 9:15 p.m. Wednesday night on Interstate 35E near Highway 13 in Mendota Heights.
Brodkorb was driving a 2004 Subaru Forester northbound when it hit the wall at the walkway then came to rest against the jersey barrier, according to the State Patrol report filed at 11:44 p.m.
The State Patrol reported that alcohol was detected in Brodkorb’s system, but the report did not provide more details.
Road conditions on the three-lane northbound section was described as dry at the time of crash.
Brodkorb has been at the center attention after he admitted to an affair he had with former Senate Majority Leader Amy Koch, R-Buffalo, when he was her executive assistant. He lost his job in December 2011 one day after Koch resigned her leadership position over an “inappropriate relationship” with a staffer.
Brodkorb filed a lawsuit July 23, 2012, against the Senate, state of Minnesota and Secretary of the Senate Cal Ludeman claiming gender discrimination as he says he was treated differently than female staffers who had affairs with male legislators.
He was seeking damages in excess of $500,000.
