Boys Basketball: Upsala survives cold shooting night to hold off Holdingford

A cold shooting night threatened to spoil the Upsala boys basketball team’s unbeaten record at Holdingford, Tuesday.

But after falling behind 23-19 at halftime, the Cardinals opened the second half with a 9-0 spurt en route to a 53-42 win, Upsala’s lowest scoring output of the season.

Junior Christian Pekarek and senior Avery Smieja teamed up for 27 points and each grabbed seven rebounds, while senior Garrett Wolf had nine points and six rebounds to lead Upsala.

Seniors Matt Abeler (7), Nick Frieler (3), Andy Nelson (3) and Eric Frieler (2) and junior Nathan Ehrenberg (2) also scored for the Cardinals.

Sophomore Matt Vasilj accounted for the bulk of Holdingford’s offense with 18 points, with senior Alex Hiltner chipping in seven.

Both teams struggled from the free-throw line, with Upsala going 19-of-33 and Holdingford shooting 5-of-12.
