The corner of Second Street Northeast and First Avenue Northeast is anticipating the opening of My Best Friend’s Closet. The consignment shop, owned and operated by Sarah Blanco and Kristi Schwendeman, has been a long-time dream of the two.
“We have always wanted to have this type of business,” said Schwendeman. “We are thrifters, always shopping for a good deal. This is perfect for us.”
The two best friends were looking for a site when they came across the empty building next to White’s Plumbing. They stopped for a look.
“It was perfect. It had lots of charm and a homey, comfortable feeling. We didn’t have to do much but decorate,” said Blanco.
Blanco and Schwendeman began in January to amass an impressive inventory of clothing along with racks and shelving to display their items.
“Through Facebook and our friends and their friends, we collected what we are starting with. People are still bringing their unwanted items to us,” said Schwendeman.
While the new business is not officially opening until Monday, Feb. 25, the two owners will be working in the shop the week before and will accept consignment items.
My Best Friend’s Closet plans to begin operations by only offering clothing for men and women, from junior to plus sizes, and purses, shoes, loungewear and outerwear.
“All the clothing is guaranteed to be gently-used and name brand,” said Blanco. “Those that drop off items on consignment will receive 50 percent of the sale price.”
Other items available at the shop include Paparazzi Jewelry, Herbal Life and Beauti Control.
There are plenty of ideas for the future of My Best Friend’s Closet, but for now Schwendeman and Blanco will stick with adult clothing. They plan to slowly incorporate the rest of their ideas.
My Best Friend’s Closet will be open six days a week. Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays it will be open from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Thursdays’ hours are 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. and on Saturday, the consignment store will be open from noon – 4 p.m.
