Area Boys Basketball: Pierz edges Eden Valley-Watkins, Upsala hits triple digits twice

Area boys basketball action from Feb. 21 – 23:

Little Falls 72, Mora 63

Little Falls picked up a crucial GRC victory over visiting Mora, Feb. 23, topping the Mustangs 72-63 to avenge an earlier loss and retain sole possession of first place in the GRC.

Senior Collin Eckman led the Flyers with 21 points on 8-of-12 shooting, with junior Troy Scott and senior Jake Scott adding 16 and 15 points, respectively.

Senior Spencer Lubbers added seven points and crashed the glass for 16 rebounds, while senior Travis Spillum and junior Sebastian Sowada each added five points.

 

Little Falls 60, Rocori 59

Eckman led four Flyers in double figures with a 21-point night as Little Falls eked past visiting Rocori 60-59, Feb. 21.

Jake Scott followed with 15 points, while Troy Scott and sophomore Bryce Zawatzke netted 10 apiece.

Zawatzke also grabbed 12 rebounds, while Lubbers collected four points and four assists.

 

Pierz 63, Eden Valley-Watkins 59

Pierz only had four players score in its Central Minnesota Conference (CMC) finale against Eden Valley-Watkins (EVW), Feb. 23.

But those four delivered standout performance for the Pioneers, lifting Pierz to a 63-59 home victory.

Senior Cullin Carter led the way with 26 points and senior Mitch Bednar recorded 16, with each pulling down 11 rebounds to notch double-doubles.

Senior Ben Boser followed with 15 points and senior T.J. Hoheisel collected six points and four rebounds.

 

BBE 67, Pierz 35

Second-ranked and defending state champion Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa (BBE) closed in on another CMC title with a 67-35 win over visiting Pierz, Feb. 22.

Bednar and Hoheisel each had seven points and Carter and junior Noah Thomsen picked up five apiece to lead Pierz.

Junior Matt Athman picked up four points and a team-high eight rebounds, Boser recorded three points and six assists and senior Jon Fuhrman had two points and six rebounds.

 

Upsala 112, West Central Area 76

Upsala started the weekend with a runaway 112-76 triumph at West Central Area, Feb. 22, then hit triple figures again with a 105-96 win over visiting Lakeview Christian, Feb. 23.

Six players netted at least 12 points against West Central, led by junior Christian Pekarek with 24.

Senior Garrett Wolf stuffed the box score with 19 points, nine assists and seven rebounds, followed offensively by senior Matt Abeler with 14 points and seniors Eric Frieler, Nick Frieler and Avery Smieja with 12 apiece.

 

Upsala 105, Lakeview Christian 96

The following night, the Cardinals welcomed in Lakeview Christian and the state’s unofficial all-time scoring leader in senior Anders Broman for a non-conference clash.

Upsala had its hands full trying to keep Broman in check, as he nailed 14-of-22 three-point shots on his way to racking up 60 points.

But the Cardinals exhibited strong enough shooting as a whole to knock off the Lions, hitting 53 percent of their shots from the field.

Pekarek collected 29 points, seven rebounds and four assists while Smieja posted 17 points and a staggering 20 rebounds for a double-double.

Wolf added 14 points and six assists and Abeler netted 11 points.

 

Long Prairie-Grey Eagle 50, Royalton 32

Long Prairie-Grey Eagle  employed a stingy zone defense to hold down host Royalton 50-32, Feb. 22.

Silbernick scored 17 points and Zimny had six to lead Royalton.

Junior Jesse Popp added three points and senior Brad Woidyla, Opatz and junior Kasey Stevens each contributed two.

 

Swanville 78, Bertha-Hewitt 69

Swanville defeated visiting Bertha-Hewitt 78-69 in its final non-conference game of the season, Feb. 22.

 

Eden Valley-Watkins 54, Holdingford 48

Holdingford dropped a tight 54-48 CMC contest at EVW, Feb. 22.
