In the first meeting of the season, Little Falls was able to slow down St. Cloud Apollo’s high-octane offense to earn a 4-2 win.
But in the rematch in the Section 6A championship at St. Cloud, Feb. 28, the second-seeded Eagles were able to dictate the pace, upsetting the top-seeded Flyers 6-3.
Little Falls had several opportunities to take control early, but squandered a five-minute major power play less than two minutes into the game and another two-minute advantage late in the period.
However, the Flyers did get on the board first 2:55 into the second period, as senior Taylor Drager scored off of an assist from junior Jack Schulte.
Apollo rattled off the next three goals, though, building a 3-1 advantage just 17 seconds into the third period.
Senior Luke Majerle cut the lead to 3-2 5:06 into the third, but Apollo regrouped to push its edge back to two goals 54 seconds later.
Senior Ben Newman pulled the Flyers back within a goal once again with three minutes to play, but the Eagles added an insurance goal with 1:23 remaining, then tacked on an empty-netter in the closing seconds to provide the final margin of victory.
Little Falls closed the season with a record of 21-7.
Seniors on this year’s team included Michael Stumpf, Matthew Stumpf, Austin Bjorge, Majerle, Newman, Taylor Kottschade, Drager, Spencer Fenske, Tyler Claseman, Nathan Adamietz, J.D. Jopp and August Maciej.
