Section 5A Girls Basketball: Upsala advances to sub-section finals, Royalton drops tight game
By PATRICK SLACK
Browerville managed to give Upsala a scare.
But the fifth-seeded Tigers didn’t have any answer for the overwhelming Upsala senior duo of Aimee Pelzer and Tracy Herzog, as top-seeded Upsala churned out an 83-54 victory in the Sub-Section 5A West semifinals held at Wadena-Deer Creek, Saturday.
Pelzer accumulated a triple-double with 32 points, 15 rebounds and 10 assists on the night, while Herzog finished with 29 points and 11 rebounds.
Senior Alissa Zehrer added six points and junior Katie Ripplinger and eighth-grader Katlin Welinski each chipped in four.
Browerville opened up a 31-21 lead in the first half before the Cardinals rallied to take a 41-37 edge into the break.
The second half belonged squarely to Upsala, with the Cardinals outscoring Browerville 42-17 to earn the win.
Upsala will now take on third-seeded Sebeka, Tuesday, for a spot in the Section 5A finals.
Isle 50, Royalton 42
Royalton flustered Isle defensively throughout its sub-section semifinal held in McGregor, Saturday.
But the Royals couldn’t manage quite enough offense to come away with the win, falling 50-42.
A pair of late baskets allowed Isle to open up a seven-point lead at the break, then a three to open the second half pushed the gap to 10.
Royalton whittled the deficit down to four but couldn’t close back within one possession.
Emily Fussy led the Royals with a 14-point performance, with Petron netting 10, senior Hannah Fussy scoring nine and Meyer contributing seven.
Royalton finished the season with a record of 12-14.
Seniors on this year’s team included Meyer, Petron and Hannah Fussy.
