Pierz knew going into its Section 6AA opener at Long Prairie-Grey Eagle (LPGE) that the opening sequence would be key, Thursday.

Take a quick lead and the Pioneers would be able to play at their pace.

If not, the painfully patient LPGE offense would be able to sit back and wait for the perfect opportunities.

Pierz managed to trade early buckets, but the Thunder built its lead to double digits midway through the first half en route to a 56-42 win.

Senior Ben Boser scored 14 points and senior Mitch Bednar recorded 11 points and 10 rebounds for the Pioneers.

Senior Jess Kasper returned after missing more than a month due to injury to net eight points, while senior Cullin Carter picked up six points and senior T.J. Hoheisel added three.

Pierz finished with a record of 14-13.

Seniors on this year’s team included Bednar, Hoheisel, Boser, Kasper, Carter, Elias Schomer, Jon Fuhrman and Josh Templin.

Sauk Centre 58, Holdingford 55

Seventh-seeded Holdingford nearly sprung a first-round upset.

But second-seeded Sauk Centre escaped with a 58-55 home win, Thursday, advancing in the Sub-Section 6AA North quarterfinals.

The Huskers finished with a record of 7-18.

Seniors on this year’s team included Taylor Milbrandt, Brent Gerads, Beau Maciej, Cody Schwinghammer, Sam Butler and Alex Hiltner.
