A Buckman woman was killed in a two vehicle accident at the intersection of Benton Counnty Road 12 and Benton County Road 78 involving a semi-truck and her passenger vehicle.
About 7 a.m. this morning, Tuesday, March 26, a semi-truck, driven by Dale Scholl, 65, Royalton, and a car driven by Carol Theis, 79, collided and both ended up in the yard of a residence on the southwest corner of the intersection. Theis was pronounced dead at the scene. Scholl was transported to St. Cloud Hospital by ambulance where he is currently listed in stable condition.
Due to the crash, the semi-truck spilled its load of corn onto the roadway, closing the road to traffic and damaging power lines, which caused an electrical outage in the area.
The Benton County Sheriff’s Department’s initial investigation indicated that, prior to the crash, the semi-truck was driving westbound on Benton County Road 12 and that the car was driving southbound on Benton County Road 78. Both northbound and southbound traffic at the intersection has a stop sign. Evidence gathered at the scene, indicated that Theis’ vehicle initially stopped at the intersection, but then failed to yield right-of-way and proceeded in front of Scholl’s truck.
The Benton County Sheriff’s Department, Rice Fire Department and Gold Cross Ambulance responded to the scene. Assisting at the accident scene were East Central Electric, the Benton County Highway Department and the Minnesota State Patrol.
Thursday morning, the Benton County Sheriff’s office reported that additional witness statements and further examination of physical evidence from the accident scene, revealed that Theis proceeded into the intersection without first stopping for the stop sign on Benton County Road 78, as initially thought.
The accident remains under investigation.
