To the Editor:
Our big city friends should be jealous. What we experienced in Upsala over the past month in cheering on the girls and boys basketball teams illustrates the blessings of small town living.
In separate rallies celebrating their teams’ successes at reaching the State Tournament, both the girls and the boys summed up the season’s greatest joy in a single word: “family.” And it showed on the court.
That’s what we fans in the stands experienced, too. Family. A community of friends traveled, cheered, analyzed, celebrated and even cried together. What a blast.
Thanks to all who had a part in this historic season: Enthusiastic fans of all ages; Denise Cheney and the Upsala band (34 Upsala Rousers in 24 days at 12 games and three rallies); friends in surrounding communities who jumped on our “fan bus” and Record sports editor, Patrick Slack, for the great coverage all season.
Congratulations players and coaches on combining for a 58-7 win-loss record and twin Section 5A championships. You gave us a lot to cheer about and every reason to be proud of our small town community. Go Upsala. — Bill and Lisa Abeler, Upsala
