At 6:01 a.m. Tuesday morning, the Motley Fire Department received a report of a car fire at 64 Harrison, west of Highway 10.

“A neighbor called 911 when she saw a Chevrolet Blazer, owned by Eric Peters, glowing from the inside,” said Fire Chief Dave Grieg. “After she called, she walked to the house and checked on the children living there.”

Police Chief Brian Madison, who arrived on the scene later, said a child had been sleeping in the home, just 20 feet from the burning vehicle.

The fire began in the back of the vehicle and it was a total loss.

State Fire Marshall John Steinbach, a certified fire investigator, arrived on the scene and said he believed it was arson, but more details were unavailable.

Since the fire is still under investigation, Jennifer Longaecker from the Minnesota Department of Public Safety in St. Paul said she is unable to release any information until the report is closed, which may take up to a year.
