On Monday, Kevin and Paula Mastey will be closing on the Old Bank Restaurant in Pierz. They have purchased the business from Chuck and Karen Gruber.
“The Grubers had it for sale for awhile,” said Paula. “We looked at it in 2009, but the timing was wrong for us. With our children older now, it is time.”
After the final papers are signed, the restaurant will be closed for four days, reopening Friday. Paula has big plans for those four days.
“We are going to remove the dark paneling throughout the restaurant and repaint. I’m doing beige and tan in the banquet room and Pierz colors: grey and red with black accents in the restaurant,” she said.
The Masteys will be removing the chandeliers and adding fans to the banquet room and installing pendant lighting in the restaurant.
The wall between the bar and the banquet room will disappear, as will the top cabinets around the bar.
“This will give the two rooms more light and open the area up a lot,” she said.
There will be a few menu changes in the restaurant.
“I will be adding some pasta dishes and enlarging the wrap and salad menu,” she said. “But all the favorites will remain.”
Paula said nothing is set in stone and the menu will continue to evolve.
Paula is currently the finance director for Big Lake and Kevin, who grew up near Mayhew Lake, is the supervisor for the Plymouth Water Department. She will be leaving her job and working the restaurant full-time. Kevin will stay with his current job for now. The family lives in Becker and when their youngest child is finished with school in two years, they will move to Pierz.
“Kevin will look for another position when we move here. He will also help with bartending and pouring coffee,” Paula said. “He plans to do a lot of schmoozing.”
Paula has always wanted to own a restaurant, especially in Pierz. Both sets of her grandparents owned eating establishments in Pierz in past years. Jeanette Schulte owned the Star Cafe and Norb and Ethel Jansen owned the Pierz Cafe. Ethel also baked pies for the Old Bank Restaurant and Paula remembers coming to Pierz in the summers and helping her grandmother bake.
