Alice Nelson, 90

obit-Nelson-AliceAlice Caroline Nelson, a resident of Darling Township, passed away at home Saturday, April 20, 2013, surrounded by her family.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, April 24, at Bethel Lutheran Church in Little Falls with the Rev. Jean Megorden officiating. Burial was in the Darling Cemetery.
Alice was born Aug. 2, 1922, in Little Falls to Jennie Lundberg and Herman Hanson. She attended elementary school in Darling and high school in Little Falls. After attending teacher’s training, she taught country school in Platte Township (1942) and in Bowlus (1961), and she later served as a bookkeeper and teacher’s aide at Dr. Knight school in Randall. In 1942 Alice married Wilbur Nelson, together they farmed in Darling and raised four children. When Wilbur died in 1988, she continued to live on the family farm with daughter Cindy. Alice loved to bake and can, and won many awards for canned goods at the county and state fairs. She won Best of Class at the state fair in 1995 for her jams and jellies. She was also an avid Scrabble player and late in life learned to use the Internet to play friends and relatives with a fierce competitive spirit. Between 1977 and 2001 Alice took numerous trips to California to visit her son and to enjoy the sights.
Alice is survived by her children Roger (Diane) Nelson of Royalton, David Nelson (Michele Montllor) of Pasadena, Calif., Sylvia (David) Larson of Little Falls, and Cindy Nelson of Darling; sisters Burdette Johnson and Merlin Williams of Minneapolis; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Wilbur, brother Glenn and sister Beatrice.
Casketbearers were grandchildren Michael Nelson, Darla Nelson, Chris Larson, Katie Larson and great-grandchildren Meghan Nelson, Mandy Nelson, Trevor Nelson and Mitchell Nelson.
She was dearly loved by her entire family and will be sorely missed.
