Marie Barthel, 98

obit-Barthel-M.Marie Barthel a resident of Swanville,  passed away Tuesday, April 23, 2013, at the Long Prairie Nursing Home in Long Prairie.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, April 26,  at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Swanville,   with  Father Ron Dockendorf officiating. Burial will be in the St. John the Baptist Parish Cemetery in Swanville.
Marie was born Nov. 14, 1914, in Todd County,  to the late John and Genevieve (Gothman) Mootz. She grew up in the Long Prairie area and attended country school  at the “Frog Pond” school in Todd County. Marie was united in marriage to Henry Barthel, Nov. 30, 1935,  in Long Prairie. The couple farmed one mile north of Swanville for many years. Marie was known to have one of the biggest gardens in the area. She was very generous with the fruits of her labor, sharing vegetables with everyone in the area. Marie lived by the motto, “It’s better to give than to receive.” She was also a wonderful cook that could make something out of nothing. Some of her specialties were caramel rolls, homemade bread on the wood stove, and canning vegetables. She also enjoyed playing smear with her family and loved to watch birds especially the red cardinals that came to visit.
Marie is survived by son, James (Lynn) Barthel of Swanville; daughter, Lois (Marc) Pelzer of Fort Ripley; foster son, Herman (Mary Jane) Piene of Pierz; sister, Vera Burtrum of Baxter; 14 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, and seven great-great-grandchildren.
Marie was preceded in death by parents, John and Genevieve Mootz; husband, Henry Barthel; siblings, Leo, George, Iris, Irene, and Hilda.
