Upsala High School presents its top 10 honor students for 2013

Upsala-Honor-StudentsUpsala High School has announced its top 10 honor graduates for 2013.

They include:

Matthew Abeler, the son of Bill and Lisa Abeler of Burtrum, is the valedictorian of his class. During high school, he has participated in basketball, Drama Club, band, choir, National Honor Society (NHS), Big Brothers and Big Sisters (BBBS), yearbook and Student Council. Abeler has a 3.948 grade point average (gpa) and plans to attend Northwestern College for his degree in electronic media communications.

Rebecca Scepaniak, the daughter of Tom and Eda Scepaniak of Bowlus, is the salutatorian of her class. During high school, she has participated in BBBS, dance team, Knowledge Bowl, was vice president of Student Council, senior class president, vice president of NHS, concert choir and involved in concert band, volleyball, and drama. Scepaniak has a 3.918 gpa and plans to attend Bethel University to double major in political science and communications.

Meredith Swanson is the daughter of Daniel and Marla Swanson of Swanville. During her high school career, she has been involved in NHS, BBBS, band, choir, yearbook and FFA. Swanson plans to attend North Dakota State University (NDSU) for a degree in horticulture. She has a 3.5 gpa.

Aimee Pelzer is the daughter of Paul and Charee Pelzer of Swanville. During her high school career, she has been involved in NHS, choir, BBBS, basketball, volleyball, and softball and was senior class treasurer. Pelzer has a 3.547 gpa and plans to attend Jamestown College, Jamestown, N.D. for a degree in nursing.

Kaylin Osberg is the daughter of Kerry Osberg and Chad Fouquette of Upsala. During her school career, she has been involved in volleyball, yearbook and the Upsala Robotics Team. Upon graduation, Osberg plans to attend St. Cloud State University (SCSU) to major in graphic design. She graduates with a 3.498 gpa.

Andrew Nelson is the son of Mikel and Julie Nelson of Burtrum. During his school career, he has been involved in NHS, band, choir, drama, football, basketball and baseball. Nelson has a 3.494 gpa and plans to attend University of Mary – North Dakota for a degree in physical therapy.

Kimberly DeZurik is the daughter of Greg and Belinda DeZurik of Burtrum. During high school, she has been involved in band, choir, drama, dance, and BBBS. DeZurik enrolled as a full-time post-secondary education option (PSEO) student at SCSU for her senior year of high school. She plans to continue at SCSU next year to major in accounting. She is graduating with a gpa of 3.485.

MaKenna Peterson is the daughter of Eric and Luann Peterson of Grey Eagle. During her high school career, she has been involved in FFA, secretary of the NHS, vice president of Student Council, band, choir, basketball, volleyball, and track. Peterson plans to attend St. Cloud Community and Technical College to major as a dental hygienist. She is graduating with a gpa of 3.421.

Sadie Welinski is the daughter of Donald and Carmen Welinski of Little Falls. During high school, she has been involved in volleyball, basketball, Knowledge Bowl, BBBS, Student Council, band and pep band. Upon graduation, Welinski plans to attend the College of St. Benedict to major in nursing. Welinski graduates with a 3.241 gpa.

Alissa Zehrer is the daughter of Pat and Patty Zehrer of Swanville. During high school, she has been involved in volleyball, basketball, softball, Student Council, choir, BBBS and was senior class representative. She will attend the University of Minnesota – Duluth to pursue a degree in business. She graduates with a 3.205 gpa.

Graduation ceremonies will take place at Upsala Area Schools Saturday, May 25, at 1:30 p.m.
