It was a peculiar ending, but it resulted in a conference title.

Pierz’ scheduled Central Minnesota Conference (CMC) finale against Kimball Area was rained out Tuesday, leaving the Pioneers tied atop the CMC with Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted at 9-3.

In what proved to be Pierz’ final CMC action, the Pioneers split a doubleheader at Maple Lake, May 16, winning the opener 4-0 before dropping the finale 5-4.

Senior Cody Weiss nearly single-handedly took care of the Irish in game one, tripling twice and scoring two runs to support his own cause, as he pitched a four-hit shutout.

Senior Ben Boser added a double and a run and senior Brad Meyer picked up a run and an RBI.

Pierz nearly dug out of a 5-0 hole in the second game, but its rally came up one run short.

Senior Nick Lochner went 2-for-3, while Weiss homered and reached base three times and junior Nate Athman doubled and scored.

Junior Chris Ortman tossed 3 2/3 innings of scoreless relief.

Holdingford fell 4-0 and 7-2 in a doubleheader at Rockford Area to close its CMC season, May 16, then fell 12-6 to visiting Foley, May 17.
