Armadillo killed a long way from home

armadilloAn armadillo was found dead alongside 160th Street, about one mile south of Highway 27 (Evergreen Road). Armadillos live in temperate and warm habitats, including rain forests, grasslands and semi-deserts. Cold is their enemy because of their low metabolic rate and lack of fat stores. Mary Zack of Little Falls took a photo of this armadillo, which appears to be a nine-banded armadillo. Her neighbor said its body was about 2 1/2 feet long (not including the tail). Many cultures eat armadillo meat, which is said to taste like pork. An article in National Geographic said nine-banded armadillos are the only animals other than humans known to carry a strain of bacteria linked to leprosy.
