An armadillo was found dead alongside 160th Street, about one mile south of Highway 27 (Evergreen Road). Armadillos live in temperate and warm habitats, including rain forests, grasslands and semi-deserts. Cold is their enemy because of their low metabolic rate and lack of fat stores. Mary Zack of Little Falls took a photo of this armadillo, which appears to be a nine-banded armadillo. Her neighbor said its body was about 2 1/2 feet long (not including the tail). Many cultures eat armadillo meat, which is said to taste like pork. An article in National Geographic said nine-banded armadillos are the only animals other than humans known to carry a strain of bacteria linked to leprosy.
