Royalton High School (RHS) has named Justin Opatz as its May Student of the Month. He is the son of Gary and Marie Opatz.
“Justin has always shown his excellent leadership capabilities in the band program. He is a fine musician and his enthusiasm for playing his horn was an example that the younger students could look up to, particularly in pep band and marching band,” said Steve Kunkel, band instructor.
Opatz is also involved in basketball, track, National Honor Society, Student Council, Tech Club and youth group.
Basketball is the center of Opatz’s high school athletic career and many of his most memorable high school moments involve the sport. “Justin has developed into an outstanding student and athlete,” said head basketball coach Randy Thielges. “He has demonstrated leadership skills in the classroom, the hallways and on the court.”
Good enough has never been acceptable for Opatz, and Sheri Menden, English teacher, said, “He is always ready to take on a pile of work and do so in a positive fashion – always with a smile on his face.”
Opatz is the salutatorian of his graduating class and winner of the Male Student of the Year Scholarship.
Opatz will attend Bemidji State University this autumn where he will major in accounting possibly becoming a CPA. “Be involved,” Opatz advises his underclassmen. “Four years go by fast, don’t waste them.”
