Holdingford staged a dramatic rally to knock off the Sub-Section 6AA East top seed and reach the section’s final four.
But the Huskers ran out of postseason magic in a showdown with the West’s top-seeded Pequot Lakes, falling 6-3
The Huskers began a rain-condensed slate of double-elimination play at Waite Park with a 6-5 victory over Albany, May 23, before falling 11-5 to Milaca later that night.
With its season on the line, the Huskers then bounced back in dramatic fashion, stunning top-seeded Paynesville Area 9-8, May 24.
The game got off to a back-and-forth start, with Paynesville erasing an early 5-2 Holdingford lead with six unanswered runs, taking an 8-5 edge into the seventh.
After a single by junior McKenzie Dockendorf and a fielder’s choice, senior Jena Volkers delivered a base hit and senior Alyssa Ohman was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Senior Haley Huls followed with a two-run single to close the gap to one, then senior Ashley Breth provided the clutch go-ahead hit, which proved to be the game-winner.
Ohman scattered 16 Paynesville hits in the complete-game effort.
Holdingford finished the season with a record of 12-7.
Seniors on this year’s team included Volkers, Huls, Ohman, Amanda Beckius and Breth.
