Stephen Strusz, son of Jayson and Joan Strusz of Bowlus, was recently named Royalton High School’s (RHS) May Artist of the Month.
“I took a ceramics class when I was a junior and tried the wheel a few times. This year I took a freelance art class where you get to choose what you want to study,” said Strusz. “I started throwing pottery and finally found a class that I looked forward to attending every day. I found out that through working on improving every day, that I could excel in the RHS art room.”
RHS art instructor Carl Halverson said, “Steve is living proof that patience and effort make all the difference in the art room. Because we reward efforts by scoring daily points, students like Steve can take an art class unsure if they have art talent, find their area of expertise, and earn an ‘A’ for their grade.
“Sometimes you don’t even realize that you have a gift until you persist beyond the first few failures to find success. It’s true in academics, sports, the arts and basically, in life,” said Halverson.
Strusz will display and sell some of his pottery at the Royalton Art in the Park event, to be held at Memorial Park Saturday, June 15, from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.
Strusz plans to attend either St. Cloud Technical College or St. Mary’s after graduation.
“I also will continue to throw pottery and have a goal to purchase my own pottery wheel and kiln one day soon,” said Strusz.
