A year after throwing a playoff no-hitter, Little Falls senior Gabe Ploof came within two outs of matching the feat, leading the Flyers to a 6-1 win over Pierz at Joe Faber Field in St. Cloud, May 31.
Despite having to wait until the seventh to record a hit, Pierz wasted no time getting a run on the board, using a leadoff walk by senior Ben Boser, a Little Falls error and a sacrifice fly by senior Brady Dorn to go ahead 1-0.
The Flyers missed out on a chance to score with two baserunners in the bottom of the inning, but broke through on RBI singles by junior Kyle Boser and senior Josh Wenzel in the second to take a 2-1 lead.
Ploof busted the game open with a bases-clearing triple in the fourth, then senior Nate Backowski capped the scoring with a run-scoring hit in the fifth.
Pierz senior Nick Lochner broke up Ploof’s no-hit bid with a seventh-inning single, with the Little Falls left-hander finishing with eight strike outs.
Boser and Wenzel each collected two hits for the Flyers and junior Alec Zack and sophomore Bryce Zawatzke each singled and scored.
