The Morrison County Board, acting as fiscal agent, awarded the contract for the Pierz Safe Routes to School project to C and L Excavating Inc. at $473,449.15.
Bids came in about 21 percent over the engineer’s estimate, Public Works Director Steve Backowski said.
“The bids are typically set up three to four years ahead of time,” he said. “We try to make allowances for inflation.”
As a result of discussions between the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) and the city of Pierz, MnDOT agreed to contribute an additional $70,000 toward the project, with the city of Pierz putting in $30,000 more.
“As fiscal agent, we do take on some of the responsibility for the project, some oversight,” said County Administrator Deb Gruber. “Our engineering staff and our expertise are being used. That’s the only way the cities can do this kind of project.”
