Sister Mary Baptista was born June 8, 1930, in Butler. She was the youngest of 11 children born to Victor and Anna (Hendrickx) Schik. She was a Franciscan Sister for 64 years.Sister Mary Baptista had an understanding and listening presence as she dealt with people. She was a woman of many special talents but clearly her best talent, which she used her entire life, was building relationships with people of all ages, cultures and backgrounds. She discovered great joy and fun in living while at the same time she was mindful of God’s presence with his loving and faithfully gentle care for her and those with whom she related. She had a love for nature and found that the songs of birds were a marvelous way to renew her spirit. She had a deep appreciation for God’s unconditional love and constant care for her. She knew that all with whom she journeyed through life helped her become more grounded in her love for God. Sister Mary Baptista ministered at the St. Cloud Children’s Home; St. Francis High School, Little Falls; The Dwelling Place in Sauk Rapids and St. Elizabeth Home in St. Cloud. Sister Mary Baptista worked as a teacher assistant at Sacred Heart School in Sauk Rapids and as a home health aide at Ridgeview Place in St. Cloud. She became a beautician after attending the Ritters School of Beauty in St. Paul.
