This morning (Tuesday, July 2), the Pierz Fire Department responded to a fire at a hog barn on Nature Road, six miles east of Royalton.
“The building was totally engulfed when we got the call,” said Pierz Fire Chief Brian Boser. “We called Royalton for mutual aid for help with water and manpower.”
The 20-foot by 40-foot building was a total loss and 175 hogs perished, Boser said.
Fifteen Pierz firefighters responded and five firefighters from Royalton responded with a pumper and a tanker.
“We dropped one tank of water and pulled a little bit of hose and then they released us,” said Royalton Fire Chief Duane Bursey.
Boser said the scene was cleared at 11:15 a.m. Royalton firefighters were released 45 minutes after they arrived.
Firefighters continue to monitor the area. “We’ve got eyes on it,” said Boser.
The cause of the fire is undetermined and the incident is under investigation.
