Second year for Medallion Hunt — $100 Upsala Bucks for the finder

Upsala will be celebrating 130 years of Swedes during this year’s Heritage Days celebration, Aug. 9-11.
The celebration kicks off with a Medallion Hunt Monday. Clues will be posted at Stearns Bank, Upsala Farm Store, at Upsala City Hall, on the Upsala City Web site www.cityofupsala.com, by 9 a.m. each day.
“Anyone who thinks they may have found the medallion, should call me at (320) 630-5055,” said City Clerk Adrian Welle. “If they are determined to be the winner, $100 Upsala Bucks will be theirs to spend.”
Look for a metal medallion with 2013 written on the front and Upsala Heritage Festival written on the back.
The event begins at 7 p.m. Friday evening with a free country and gospel concert under the tent in the park. People are asked to bring chairs. Food and refreshments will be available.
College Night 2013 will be at the Upsala High School auditorium with free pizza and pop.
A 5K run and walk gets Saturday off to an active start at 8 a.m. Preregister at www.langeoil.com or that morning at the Upsala School Commons.
A softball tournament near the Rec Building runs from 9 a.m. – 7 p.m. Food and beer will be available.
The parade begins Saturday, at 10:30 a.m. This year’s theme is “The Best Central Minnesota Small Town.”
Lunch and tours start at the Borgstrom House at 11:30 a.m. This year, author Shirley Bergstrom will speak at 1 p.m. Her father, Paul E. Johnson, grew up in Upsala and she vacationed in Upsala during her growing-up years.
She will be at the house between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. signing books and greeting friends.
“My dad and his sister left notes telling family and Upsala stories,” Bergstrom said, “so I got them straight from the horse’s mouth.”
Bergstrom has many fond memories of swimming in Cedar Lake and riding on hay wagons. Her book is filled with stories of Upsala history.
“Party in the Park” follows the parade, with a car show, food booths, beer garden, cake wheel, dunk tank, kids’ games, a bean bag tournament, big inflatables and music.
FFA hosts a kids’ pedal pull at 12:30 p.m. Fire Department water fights start at 2:30 p.m., followed by kids’ water fights.
The Upsala Baseball Association (UBA) is sponsoring a party at the Rec building beginning at 7 p.m.
Octoball runs from 7 p.m. – 9 p.m. Wheelbarrow races start at 7 p.m. with the championship race at 8:30 p.m.
Disc Jockey Tina Mandel will be on from 7:30 p.m. – 11:30 p.m.
Fireworks sponsored by the Upsala American Legion and Upsala Lions Club start at 10 p.m.
Sunday starts with the community worship service at 10 a.m. in the high school gym.
A Dad’s Belgian waffle feed at the high school cafeteria, will be served from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.
The weekend festivities conclude with a community threshing bee at 1 p.m. at Dennis Westrich’s home east of town. Visitors are invited to bring their own chairs to 3478 50th Ave.
