Four starters return on each side for the Pierz boys and girls cross country teams, led by a trio of All-Central Minnesota Conference (CMC) juniors.

Junior Kyle Becker, a four-year letterwinner, once again leads the Pioneers boys, coming off a ninth-place finish at last year’s CMC meet.

Sophomore Matt Janson will likely slide into the No. 2 role, head coach Rey Zimney said, with the team’s lone senior Mitchell Czech and junior Daniel Tautges also returning with varsity time.

The fifth scoring spot remains up for grabs for now, with eighth-graders Vitaly Dahmen, Andrew Dieterle and Bryce Hoheisel looking to fill it by season’s end.

On the girls side, juniors Maggie Gruber and Arre Langer, second-team All-CMC runners a year ago, as well as junior Dana Hennen and freshman Lilly Guck return as starters.

Freshman Taryn Becker and eighth-grader Beth-el Algarin are also expected to compete for varsity action.

Pierz will make the move from longtime home Section 5A to Section 6A this fall, opening the year at Milaca, Monday.
