With All-State placer Daniel Borash gone heading into last fall, the Royalton boys cross country team needed someone to step up in his place.

They didn’t have to look far, as now-junior Zach Carlson slid seamlessly to the front of the pack for the Royals, placing fourth in Section 6A in front of a 37th-place showing at state.

With only one starter gone from last year’s squad, Carlson will team up with junior Tremayne Collins, sophomore Ben Borash and freshmen Jordan Malikowski and Thomas Strusz to try to improve upon last year’s fourth-place finish in the Central Minnesota Conference and sixth-place finish in the section.

On the girls side, freshman Emma Hoheisel moves in from Pierz to join six returning runners from last year’s section team, including senior Ciara Kowalczyk, junior Jenna Trutwin, sophomore Madi Rudolph, freshman Chloe Novak and eighth-graders Amy Zabinski and Elise Yates.

“It will be tougher with Pierz and (St. Cloud) Cathedral coming to our section this year,” head coach Michael Marschel said, “(but) I believe we’ll move up as a team, both boys and girls, in the conference and section.”

Royalton is scheduled to open the season at Maple Lake, Friday.
