Granite Ridge Volleyball: Little Falls opens play in Albany tournament

Little Falls opened its season at the Albany tournament, Aug. 23, taking one of four matches.

The Flyers fell 25-18, 25-21 to perennial power Sauk Centre to open the day, then 17-25, 25-22, 15-12 to Maple Lake.

Little Falls rebounded to edge Watertown-Mayer 27-25, 15-25, 15-9 before falling 25-20, 25-22 to Osakis to close the day.

Senior Sierra Virnig and junior Kendra Pohlman were the top hitters for the Little Falls offense in the tournament, each racking up 22 kills, with sophomore Melanie Dorn distributing 24 set assists and senior Stephanie Wardarski adding 22.

Senior Jennifer Ronning had 15 kills and eight service aces and senior Brooke Finch picked up 16 kills and five service aces.

Thief River defeats LF in four

Little Falls bounced back after dropping the first two sets to pull within one, but host Thief River Falls regrouped to finish off a 25-16, 25-9, 20-25, 25-13 victory, Tuesday.

Virnig had nine kills to lead Little Falls, followed by Pohlman (6), Ronning (5), Dorn (4) and Finch (3), with Wardarski picking up seven assists.
