The fifth annual Pierz Sue Fischer Scholarship Endowment Fund golf tournament will be held at the Pierz Golf Course Saturday, Sept. 21, with check-in beginning at 10 a.m. and a shotgun start at 11 a.m. Cost is $60 for 18 holes of golf and buffet dinner at the Old Bank Restaurant in Pierz. The first golf tournaments were held at Majestic Oaks in Ham Lake.
A scholarship fund has been established in conjunction with the Mercy and Unity Hospitals Foundation in the name of Sue (Thoma) Fischer. Sue grew up in Little Falls and married Jerome Fischer from the Pierz area. Sue was a nurse at Mercy and Unity Hospital in the cath lab and ICU for more than 37 years until her life was tragically taken, Sept. 19, 2004.
Because continuing education was so important to Sue, her family, friends and co-workers have established this fund as a means of honoring her memory and her years of dedicated service to patients and to the nursing profession. All profits go to the Sue Fischer Scholarship Endowment Fund. The scholarships are for nursing students going back to school to continue their education.
Applications can be obtained from schools with an accredited nursing program or Mercy Hospital in Anoka. Over the past nine years, 19 – $1,000, seven – $1,500, two – $2,000 and a $3,000 scholarship have been awarded. Since 2005, 29 scholarships have been awarded totaling $36,500. Register by Sept. 11.
