Thursday sports recap

Area sports action from Thursday, Sept. 12:

Volleyball: Pierz 3, HLWW 0

Senior Bridget Bednar recorded 12 kills, 10 digs and nine blocks as Pierz overwhelmed host Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted (HLWW) 25-21, 25-23, 25-12, Thursday.

Junior Kayla Carter added six kills and junior Raychel Virnig had five kills and seven digs.

Junior Jessica Hawks added 25 set assists and four service aces.


Volleyball: Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa 3, Holdingford 1

Holdingford won a marathon third set to keep the match alive, but visiting Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa bounced back to close the match in four, Thursday, winning 25-11, 25-13, 28-30, 25-15.


Volleyball: Royalton 3, West Central Area 0; Upsala 3, Browerville 2; Swanville 3, Eagle Valley 0

Cross Country: Little Falls boys fifth, girls 13th at home Lucky Lindy meet

Freshman Tyler Moore (16:43.4) and senior Sebastian Sowada (16:45.6) sped in under the 17-minute mark to lead the Little Falls boys to fifth place out of 19 teams at Thursday’s home Lucky Lindy meet.

Seniors Mathew Massmann (17:07.3) and Cameron Smith (17:08.3) trailed closely behind.

Little Falls took 13th place on the girls side, led by a 39th-place finish from junior Heidi Moe (16:29.5).

Senior Vanessa Meschke (16:48.0) and sophomores Amelia Kresha (17:12.8), Linzee Gerads (18:01.0) and Claire Gammon-Deering (18:19.4) also scored for the Flyers.


Cross Country: Royalton boys first, girls second at home meet

Juniors Zach Carlson (17:50) and Tremayne Collins (18:04) finished in the top three and sophomore Ben Borash (19:40) took sixth to lead the Royalton boys to first place by a point at Thursday’s home meet.

The Royals girls took second, led by freshman Emma Hoheisel (18:31) in fifth and senior Ciara Kowalzyck (18:38) in sixth.


Girls Tennis: Aitkin 5, Little Falls 2; Foley 7, Becker 0

Boys Soccer: St. Cloud Cathedral 5, Little Falls 3

Junior Thomas Bell tallied a hat trick in a six-minute span, but it wasn’t quite enough for Little Falls to rally all the way back against host St. Cloud Cathedral in a 5-3 defeat, Thursday.

Girls Swimming: Foley 99, Little Falls 87

Host Foley edged Little Falls 99-87 in a Granite Ridge Conference dual, Thursday.

Taking first for the Flyers were Allie Foote in the 200 freestyle (2:15.26) and 500 freestyle (5:57.77) and Maykla Klever in the 50 freestyle (27.33) and 100 fly (1:09.82).
