Holdingford bolted to a 27-0 halftime lead, then held off defensive and special teams scores to defeat visiting Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa (BBE) 27-18, Sept. 13.

Senior Jordan Gombos recorded the Huskers’ first two touchdowns, catching an 11-yard pass from senior Mitch Messman and rushing for a 9-yard score.

Messman followed with another touchdown strike, finding senior Brody Davidson from 16 yards out, then powering in from a yard away to extend the gap to 27 at the half.

BBE closed within a pair of possessions coming out of the break without an offensive touchdown, taking advantage of an interception return and punt return for scores.

BBE added another score late in the game, but couldn’t convert the ensuing two-point conversion that would have made it a one-score contest.

Messman threw for 199 yards and ran for another 66 on the night, with senior Nick Catton hauling in a team-high 60 receiving yards and Gombos and Davidson making five catches apiece.

Senior Cody Bialka finished with 100 yards of total offense, 72 on the ground and another 28 through the air.

Holdingford improved to 3-0 with the win and entered the game ranked fifth in Class AA, while previously unbeaten BBE was ranked No. 8 in Class A.
