In an otherwise even contest, host Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted (HLWW) capitalized on four turnovers to knock off Pierz 28-14, Sept. 13.

Following a scoreless first quarter, senior Nathan Athman put Pierz on the board first with a 1-yard rush in the opening minute of the second.

HLWW came back to tie the score at 6-6 before halftime, then built a 21-6 advantage with 2:13 to go in the third quarter.

Pierz responded right away, with senior Tyler Millner breaking free for a 59-yard touchdown run a minute later, but the Pioneers couldn’t reach the end zone again, as HLWW tacked on a game-clinching score midway through the fourth.

HLWW held a slim 228-183 edge in total offense, with Pierz relying on Millner, who rushed for 118 yards on 14 attempts, for the bulk of its attack.

Junior Beau Winscher recorded seven solo stops and a sack, junior Austin Gall had three solo tackles and five assists and senior Chris Ortman intercepted a pass.
