Royalton and Upsala each won two Prairie Conference matches this week, moving near the top of the standings.
Royals outlast West Central, sweep past Eagle Valley
Royalton pulled out a back-and-forth five-setter at West Central Area, Sept. 12, then had a much easier time of things in a quick sweep at Eagle Valley, Tuesday.
Junior Abby Duevel turned in a dominating effort in the 22-25, 25-19, 25-14, 21-25, 15-7 win over West Central, smacking 15 kills and four service aces while also providing 15 digs.
Senior Katelyn Kasella had eight kills and junior Hayley Gottwalt posted seven kills and 25 digs, with junior Haley Olson adding 33 set assists and 13 digs.
Duevel added seven more kills and Olson had five kills and 18 set assists in Royalton’s 25-9, 25-16, 25-21 victory over Eagle Valley.
The Royals also competed in the Browerville tournament, Sept. 14, defeating New York Mills and Isle while falling to Browerville and Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg.
Upsala pulls out narrow wins
Upsala had to sweat out a five-set marathon before finally edging past visiting Browerville, Sept. 12, winning 17-25, 28-26, 17-25, 25-23, 15-13.
Junior Kristin Wuebkers set up the offense with 36 assists, with juniors Danica Cheney and Brooke Westrich the top beneficiaries with 19 and eight kills, respectively.
Junior Sara Herzog had 27 digs and junior Mariah Prokott had 26 to steady the defense.
It was a similar story at Long Prairie-Grey Eagle, Tuesday, with the Cardinals wrapping up a close match one set sooner, 25-17, 26-28, 25-17, 25-13.
Cheney led the offense with 11 kills, followed by Westrich (6), sophomore Kiley Smieja (5) and freshman Katlin Welinski (4).
Bulldogs sweep Rebels, fall to Pillager, West Central
Swanville earned its Prairie Conference victory over visiting Eagle Valley, Sept. 12, sweeping the Rebels.
The Bulldogs then fell in three sets at Pillager, Monday, and in four sets to visiting West Central, Tuesday.
