Haliks purchase Two Rivers Supermarket in Motley

Brian, Sara and Matt Halik from Nevis have purchased the Two Rivers Supermarket in Motley. They have renamed it Northwind Grocery to coincide with their Northwind Grocery and Cafe in Nevis.

The transaction with the nearly 60-year-old Polka Dot Dairy Inc., owned by the Pettit family, was finalized Aug. 22.

Polka Dot Dairy Inc. opened Tom Thumb convenience stores  in 1957 as a market to sell its milk. Two Rivers Supermarket was also included as a Tom Thumb. The division filed for bankruptcy in 2004, but the Motley store remained in the hands of Polka Dot Dairy Inc.

The new name will be added to the building soon.

The Halik family learned the store was available from Mason Brothers, the grocery supplier for their store in Nevis.

“We visited, liked the store, the location and especially the potential,” said Sara.

Matt, Sara and Brian’s son, said that right after the closing, Mason Brothers brought in a crew of 17 people to redo the store.

“We flipped the inventory around, added three more aisles and approximately 750 more items,” said Matt. “We have a new produce section in the front of the store and in the future, will be remodeling the exterior of the building.”

The Haliks have been in the grocery business for 10 years. They moved to the Nevis area from Florida, opening Northland Grocery and Cafe which also sells bait and tackle.

“I met my husband when I was in college in Florida,” said Sara. “I’m from Minnesota and after we started a family, decided to move to a small town in Minnesota to raise the children.”

While Brian and Sara will be back and forth between the two stores, oldest son Matt will be managing the Motley business and  his parents will be running the one in Nevis.

“Most of the employees have remained,” said Sara, who said they are excited about the future of the store.

“We have already had lots of positive feedback from our customers. They are thankful the store stayed open, are happy it’s full of inventory and have found we are very helpful when locating a certain product.”

Matt said he encourages his customers to let him know what they want carried in the store; that his job is to ensure he is supplying the community with what they need.

“We have always been active in the Nevis community and been part of fundraisers and helping the children of the area,” he said. “That will continue here in Motley.”
