Swanville man charged with fifth degree assault

Aaron Ray Mortenson, 19, Swanville, was charged Sept. 24 with one felony count of fifth degree assault.

On July 17, a Morrison County deputy responded to a report of an assault in Sobieski.

The victim said he was celebrating his birthday at a local bar when he stepped outside to have a cigarette. Mortenson was also outdoors and, according to the criminal complaint, began yelling at the victim.

Allegedly, Mortenson pushed the victim to the ground and when he attempted to stand up, Mortenson punched him in the face and knocked him back down. The victim said he had to go to the emergency room in Long Prairie for stitches.

A witness gave the deputy a version of the events which was similar to the victim’s.

An examination of Mortenson’s criminal history showed he had been convicted of violating and order for protection in Morrison County in December 2011 and assault in Todd County in January 2012. Based on these prior convictions, the current offense is deemed a felony.

If convicted, Mortenson faces a maximum penalty of five years in prison and/or a $10,000 fine.
