Darlene Smude, 80 year old resident of Onamia, passed away Friday, Oct. 11, 2013, at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud.
A memorial service was held Saturday, Oct. 19, at the Shelley Funeral Chapel in Onamia, with Father Greg Poser, O.S.C. officiating. Burial was in the Onamia Veterans Cemetery.
Darlene was born on August 9, 1933, in Detroit Lakes, to Severin and Ottilia (Pflepsen) Marthe. She was united in marriage to Jerome Smude Feb. 16, 1965. The couple lived in Florida and in 1966 they moved to California before returning to Minnesota in 1969. Darlene enjoyed her 25 years of work in the Dietary Aide Department of the Mille Lacs Health System. Always together, the couple enjoyed traveling, camping, and fishing with their family. Darlene was an excellent cook and baker. Her caramel rolls were a favorite among relatives and friends. She enjoyed tending to her flowers, growing vegetables, and canning. She will be greatly missed by all.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Gail Los of Milaca, Lorie Schlosser and her husband, Larry of Milaca, Julie Brown and her husband, Doug of Hillman and Mary Hamers and her husband, Ernie of Onamia; brothers, Leonard Marthe and his wife, Linda of Willmar and Gerald Marthe of Palo Alto, Calif.; sisters, Natalie Strang and her husband, Clifford of Onamia, Pat Hawes and her husband, Wayne of Onamia, and Pam Flynn of Blaine; sister-in-law, Marlis Olson of Onamia; grandchildren, Chris (Allison) Hamers, Heather (Mark) Walker, David (Rebecca) Los, Carrie (Blake) Johnson, Jeff (Kim) Brown, Jessie (Jason) Rancour, Jason (Kristal) Brown and Shane Brown; great-grandchildren, Jade, Sadie, Maison, Dominic, Callie, Jaylin, Ava, Braya, and Alayah; and many loving nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Darlene was preceded in death by her husband, Jerome; parents, Severin and Ottilia; sister, Annette; and her brother, Donald.
