Senior Nathan Athman continued his season-long dominance inside the red zone, rushing for all three of Pierz’ touchdowns in a 23-6 victory at Maple Lake, Oct. 16.

With the game scoreless deep into the first half, Athman put the Pioneers on the board with a 1-yard scoring plunge 32 seconds before the break, with juniors Ethan Lochner and Beau Winscher connecting on the two-point pass to make it 8-0 Pierz.

Maple Lake came back with a quick score in the opening minutes of the second half to close within 8-6, but was shut out the rest of the way, while Athman carried in two more scores.

“From the second quarter on we really took control of the football game,” Pierz head coach Leo Pohlkamp said. “Our defense played another solid game as well. Hopefully we can put it all together … when the playoffs begin.”

Junior Robbie Skiba was the leading ball carrier for Pierz, running 18 times for 127 yards, while Athman gained 69 yards, sophomore Jonny Kasper picked up 51 and sophomore Noah Boser had 26.

Skiba also had three solo tackles, four assists and a fumble recovery on defense.
