Royalton senior Emily Fussy winds up before delivering a forceful spike on her way to a 14-kill night in Thursday’s playoff opener.

Royalton withstood a tougher than expected test from Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City, while Upsala swept Swanville in Thursday’s opening round of the Section 5A volleyball tournament.

Going up against the Falcons, who went through 20 regular season matches without a win, Royalton had to shake off a first-set loss before regrouping for a 23-25, 25-13, 25-19, 25-21 victory.

Senior Emily Fussy had 14 kills and junior Abby Duevel had 11 to power the Royalton offense.

Senior Jenna Skajewski anchored the defense with 18 digs and junior Haley Olson distributed 30 set assists.

Upsala took down Swanville in straight sets in the third meeting of the season between the Prairie Conference rivals.

Royalton will now head to Kimball Area, Friday, while Upsala will travel to Browerville.
