2013 Morrison County Record All-Area Volleyball Team

2013 Morrison County Record All-Area Volleyball Team:

Middle Hitter

Bridget Bednar, senior, Pierz

No defensive scheme could slow down the power of Bednar, the Morrison County Record Player of the Year, this fall, as the middle hitter overwhelmed even the stingiest of opposing defenses. Bednar planted 404 kills and 78 blocks to go with 208 digs and 58 service aces to lead the Pioneers to the sub-section semifinals and a third-place finish in the Central Minnesota Conference.

Outside Hitter/Defensive Specialist

Sierra Virnig, senior, Little Falls

Whenever Little Falls needed a kill this season, odds are the ball was going to be headed Virnig’s way, as the senior proved to be a reliable option in clutch situation for the Flyers in a number of big matches. Virnig finished the season with 223 kills and 28 service aces offensively, with just as big of an impact on defense with 328 digs.

Outside Hitter/Setter

Kendra Pohlman, junior, Little Falls

Pohlman excelled in all phases of the game for the Flyers, filling in wherever needed all across the court. Pohlman finished the season with 204 kills all while sharing the setting duties, where she distributed 187 set assists. She also recorded 296 digs and 49 service aces.

Outside Hitter

Danica Cheney, junior, Upsala

After the departure of a strong senior class from a year ago, Cheney stepped into the role of go-to hitter for the Cardinals this fall, slamming 345 kills from the outside. Cheney’s impact wasn’t limited to hitting, though, as she also racked up 279 digs, 41 service aces and 35 blocks.

Setter

Jessica Hawks, junior, Pierz

Pierz’ potent hitting attack would have had a hard time excelling as it did without the efforts of Hawks, who passed out 348 set assists for the 19-10 Pioneers. She was also a dynamic weapon at the serving line with 89 aces, and mixed in 28 kills and 127 digs.

Setter

Haley Olson, junior, Royalton

Olson helped incite perhaps the best season as well as the deepest postseason run in school history this fall for the Royals, setting up the offense for a team that reached the sub-section finals. Olson’s greatest impact was made as a distributor, delivering 711 set assists, and by flummoxing foes with her serve, recording 62 aces. Olson also picked up 169 digs and 93 kills.
