The Minnesota Flying Aces took one of four games in the North American Tier III Hockey League Showcase held in Romeoville, Ill., Friday – Monday.
A.J. Gullickson scored twice for the Aces in their opening game, but Pittsburgh used a three-goal first period to emerge on top 4-2.
The Aces then began a stretch of three one-goal games in a row, started by a narrow 4-3 defeat to Dallas.
Anthony Martinez gave the Flying Aces an early 2-1 lead with a pair of first-period goals, but Dallas scored three unanswered as it weathered a late third-period power-play score by Jake Mullendore.
Minnesota bounced back to win 6-5 in a shootout over Cincinnati, receiving two goals from Eric Cruickshank and one apiece from Mullendore, Vladimir Marchenko and Eric Rogorzenski.
The Aces nearly captured a weekend split, but the Metro Jets based out of Waterford, Mich., rallied from two goals down in the third to pull out a 6-5 overtime win.
Cruickshank scored two more goals to lead the Aces once again, with Gullickson, Nick Tolin and Jack Anderholm also scoring.
