Little Falls came up just short in a pair of games during its annual early-season Northern swing, falling by identical 4-3 overtime scores at International Falls, Friday, and at Virginia/Mountain Iron-Buhl, Saturday.
After giving up the first goal against International Falls, the Flyers went ahead 3-1 midway through the second period on scores by senior Alec Zack, sophomore Mack Anez and junior Landon Atkinson.
The Broncos closed back within one with a goal late in the second period, then forced overtime with a score five minutes into the third, where they eventually emerged on top.
Sophomore Gunner Boser made 25 saves in net.
The following day’s action was even more intense, with the Flyers trailing 3-2 with time winding down in the third period.
Then, with five seconds left in regulation and the goalie pulled for an extra attacker, senior Mark Anez netted his second goal of the game to force the extra period, but the Blue Devils came through with the winner 6:43 into overtime.
Sophomore Braden Backowski tallied the Flyers’ other goal on the power play and junior goalie Ezra Spandl stopped 45 shots.
