Michael John Barten Jr., 22, Little Falls, was charged Dec. 2 in Morrison County District Court with one felony count of domestic assault by strangulation and one gross misdemeanor count of a subsequent violation of domestic assault.
On Nov. 29, the Little Falls Police responded to a report of a domestic violence incident. Officers met with two family members of Barten, one of which was the victim.
One family member told officers Barten was arguing with his girlfriend and at one point he allegedly punched the wall, damaging it. He then proceeded to choke the victim, knocking him over backward onto a coffee table.
The officers located and placed Barten under arrest.
An examination of Barten’s criminal history showed he was previously convicted of domestic assault by strangulation May 26, 2010, in Morrison County.
If convicted, Barten faces a maximum penalty of three years in prison and/or a $5,000 fine.
