Girls Basketball: Royalton second, Swanville fourth at holiday tournament

Royalton came in second and Swanville was fourth at the Royalton holiday tournament, Monday – Tuesday.

The Royals opened with a 57-39 win over Pillager, powered by senior Emily Fussy, who had 18 points, seven rebounds, five steals and four assists.

With the score 8-6 early, Royalton took control of the game with an 18-6 run, capped by back-to-back three-pointers from sophomores Amy Hoover and Nicole Popp, the latter of whom hit a game-winning three earlier in the evening in junior varsity play.

Sophomore Madi Rudolph chipped in 10 points.

Royalton fell in an early hole it couldn’t climb out of in the following night’s championship, falling behind 17-1 as Verndale posted a 61-38 victory.

Fussy scored 15 for the Royals, with Hoover and Rudolph each picking up seven.

Swanville had to encounter Verndale’s might in the opening round, falling 67-16.

Sophomore Haileigh Sales scored six points for the Bulldogs, with junior Danica Hanson and eighth-grader Brooklyn Thieschafer each pulling down seven rebounds.

The following night’s third-place game was a much tighter contest, with Swanville carrying a five-point edge into halftime before Pillager rallied for a 56-37 win.

Hanson and junior Steph Koetter each scored nine points, senior Nikki Primus posted eight points and 10 rebounds and Sales and freshman Madison Beseman each chipped in four points.
