Wrestling: Smude clinches Pierz win over Milaca

Class A’s No. 11 Pierz took down Class AA’s No. 12 Milaca 36-27 in the marquee match of Friday’s Milaca tri, while also ripping Cloquet-Esko 76-3.

After a Milaca fall at 106 pounds, Brandon Ortman tied the dual with a pin, followed by a 4-2 decision from Brandon Sullivan in a clash of ranked wrestlers. Pierz extended its lead to 21-6 after falls from Andrew Tomala and Chris Ortman, before Milaca stopped the run with an overtime victory.

Kolton Eischens won 4-2 at 145, Brett Kapsner won 2-0 at 160 and Jordon Goebel won by injury default at 170 to give Pierz a 33-12 cushion.

Milaca closed within 33-24, but Ryley Smude clinched the dual by pulling out a 4-3 win at 220.

Reese Kapsner, Brandon Ortman, Chris Ortman, Matt Kummet, Brett Kapsner, Goebel, Teddy Dehler and Smude won by fall against Cloquet-Esko, with Sullivan winning by major decision.
